John Cena has opened up about his profound respect for Gunther following their historic encounter at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The 17-time World Champion, who wrestled his final match against the “Ring General” on December 13, spoke about his opponent during an appearance on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Want To Talk About? podcast.
Despite the rivalry on television, Cena revealed that he holds Gunther in high regard as a competitor. “I cannot tell you how much respect I have for him, and I know he’s not going to say the same thing about me, and he shouldn’t, and I am okay with that,” Cena said. “It is such an honor to be able step in there with someone who whose moniker is The Ring General.”
Cena delved deeper into the philosophical similarities between them. While their characters and approaches to professional wrestling are vastly different, Cena believes they share a passion for the industry. He referenced Gunther’s catchphrase, “The Mat Is Sacred,” and aligned himself with that sentiment, although from a different perspective.
“And in my last one, if I could add a star to his uniform, someone who believes the mat is sacred, I believe the same thing,” Cena explained. “We just see it through different lenses.”
The conversation also touched on Gunther’s potential future appearance on the podcast. Rhodes mentioned that Gunther had actually requested to be a guest, a notion that Cena enthusiastically supported.
