John Cena Explains Why His WWE Farewell Tour Is ‘Uncharted Territory’

When asked about his favorite WWE storyline, John Cena isn’t pointing to a past rivalry or a championship reign. Instead, the 17-time world champion says his current farewell tour is the most meaningful run of his career.

‘The Farewell Tour’ Is His Favorite Storyline

During an appearance at FAN EXPO Denver 2025, Cena was asked which storyline or person he enjoyed working with the most. He chose his current retirement run, explaining that it’s a unique and emotional journey that fulfills a promise he made to the fans years ago.

“You know what? I hate to be topical, but I’m just going to do it—the farewell tour. Because it’s something that’s never been done,” Cena said. “Early on in my career, I made a promise to everybody who shows up and gives their all that once I was a step slower, I would let the young and gifted talent flex their muscle. And that time is now. So, it’s time to step away.”

‘Let’s See Where It Takes Us’

Cena admitted that fans were initially confused by the rollout of his retirement tour but that now, with just 15 matches left, the reality is setting in for both him and the fans. He expressed his gratitude for the emotional connection he’s feeling with the audience during this final chapter.

“I think now that we got 15 left, people kind of understand that it is coming to an end,” he said. “And having met all you guys today and heard your stories and heard your passion, I’m so grateful… I think traveling this road, man, it’s uncharted territory. So, let’s see where it takes us, right?”

The next major stop on Cena’s farewell tour is SummerSlam, where he will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes in a Street Fight. The two rivals are scheduled for one final confrontation on tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
