John Cena Vs. Gunther Confirmed For WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event On December 13

Gunther Wins “Last Time Is Now” Tournament

Gunther defeated LA Knight in the finals of the “Last Time Is Now” tournament on WWE SmackDown, securing the spot as John Cena’s final opponent. The match determines the main event for the return of Saturday Night’s Main Event, scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The conclusion of the match saw Knight execute the BFT. Gunther broke the subsequent pinfall attempt by placing his left leg on the bottom rope before the three-count. Gunther then applied a sleeper hold. After Knight returned to a vertical base, Gunther struck Knight with multiple elbows to the head before applying a cravat crossface. Knight submitted to the hold, ending the tournament.

Cena Media Appearance Scheduled

Ahead of the final match, John Cena is scheduled to make a media appearance to discuss the upcoming event. Chris Van Vliet announced that Cena will be the guest on Insight with Chris Van Vliet this Tuesday, December 9. The interview is expected to cover the farewell tour and the upcoming bout against Gunther.

Saturday Night’s Main Event Card

Saturday Night’s Main Event will take place one week from Saturday. Cena stated in previous interviews that the original concept for the broadcast was a tribute show dedicated to his career. Cena reportedly rejected this format, requesting instead that the event highlight the younger generation of talent.

As a result of this direction, WWE has announced the following additional matches for the card:

  • Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes will defend the title against either Oba Femi or Ricky Starks.
  • Singles Match: Bayley vs. Sol Ruca.
