John Cena On Heel Promo: “I Went Up There And Bombed. S**t Happens”

WWE legend John Cena has reflected on his first promo as a heel from earlier this year, admitting that the segment “bombed,” but that he has no problem with failing and learning from the experience.

John Cena’s Reaction To The Heel Promo

Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago 2025 this past weekend, Cena was asked if he was upset by the mixed reaction his first heel promo received.

“I wasn’t upset. No, I failed,” Cena said. “Ain’t nothing wrong with that. You can learn from failure, right? I went up there and bombed. Shit happens.” He added, “I’ve changed a lot over the years. I’m not the same person I was yesterday.”

John Cena’s Heel Turn

The promo in question took place on the March 17, 2025, episode of Monday Night Raw, just weeks after Cena’s shocking heel turn at the Elimination Chamber premium live event. During the 32-minute segment, Cena blamed the fans for his turn, leading to a mixed reaction of dueling chants from the crowd.

Despite the rocky start to his heel run, the character change ultimately led to Cena capturing his historic 17th World Championship at WrestleMania 41. He lost it to Rhodes at SummerSlam.
