John Cena has again ruled out coming back to the ring, and he tied the answer to the fans who paid to see him go out.
Cena appeared at FanExpo Canada at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Sunday, where the crowd broke into a “one more match” chant during his live event. He took the chant on directly, starting with the two men who would be doing any hiring.
“No Khan has got the pocketbook. Nick, Tony, they ain’t got the money. I’m out,” he said.

Cena then laid out the reasoning, framing a comeback as something that would take back what fans had already paid for.
“I say that because a lot you folks spent a lot of resources on my farewell tour. If I decide, selfishly, to come back for ego-driven reasons, basically, that’s lying to everyone. You might not mind, but there are people who paid a fortune to sit at that last match. For me to be like, ‘Just kidding.’ I met so many families who put effort into saving just to see those moments. I got out with my health, clarity, and closure.”
The position is not new. Cena announced at Money in the Bank in 2024 that 2025 would be his last year as an in-ring performer, and said repeatedly through the farewell tour that no amount of money would get him back for another match. He has previously described bringing him back for one more match as financial suicide for whoever tried it.
Cena’s answer put the question on the ticket buyer rather than on his body or his schedule, and treated a return as something that would be taken back from people who had already paid for the ending.
The setting adds to it. Money in the Bank 2024, where Cena announced the retirement, was held in Toronto. He returned to the same city on Sunday to say the decision holds.
His final match came on December 13, 2025 at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. He tapped out to Gunther, who had earned the match by winning the Last Time Is Now tournament with a win over LA Knight in the final. That card was also built to put NXT wrestlers opposite main roster talent, which Cena had pushed for. He has not wrestled since.
The year that led there gave WWE most of its 2025 storyline structure. Cena won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas for a record 17th world title, turned heel for the first time in his run as the company’s top star, lost the title back to Rhodes at SummerSlam, and then worked through Randy Orton, CM Punk, Logan Paul, Brock Lesnar, Sami Zayn, AJ Styles and R-Truth across the closing months. WWE built ticket sales around him city by city and made specific merchandise for individual stops.
He has stayed in front of WWE audiences since retiring, just not in a match. He hosted WrestleMania 42 after agreeing to it in February 2026, appeared with The Undertaker for a live podcast recording at WWE World over that weekend, and has continued working the convention circuit. His acting schedule has taken up most of the rest.
Cena has now been asked the question in front of a paying crowd and answered it in the most direct terms he has used since the retirement, and he did it in the city where the whole thing started. The John Cena Classic is reportedly planned for December, although that has not been confirmed.
