John Cena’s ankle injury is a storyline to explain his absence from Sunday’s Royal Rumble match
As reported on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plan was for Lars Sullivan to attack John Cena and knock him out of Sunday’s pay-per-view. The attack was supposed to keep Cena out of action for a while so he could leave to film a movie. The plan was for Cena vs. Sullivan at WrestleMania. We don’t know what the status is for Sullivan after he flew home a couple of weeks ago after suffering an anxiety attack.
WWE needed to come up with a way to get Cena injured to explain why he will be out of action so it was decided to go with the story about him injuring himself.
Last month, we were the first to report that Cena was unlikely for the Royal Rumble due to movie commitments. His next film is scheduled to wrap up filming sometime in late March or early April in time for WrestleMania.
