John Cena was the guest on this week’s episode of “Talking Smack” on the WWE Network. The show airs immediately after Smackdown Live on Tuesday nights. Cena was on the show to talk about the angle with AJ Styles from this week’s Smackdown and to promote the match with Styles at Sunday’s SummerSlam.
Daniel Bryan asked if Cena thinks that AJ Styles could take the “John Cena spot.” Cena said, “Are you ready for the WWE Network to crash? I’m openly waiting for someone to step up and do that.” Bryan asked what it would take for someone to do that. Cena said, “Consistency. Everybody asks me, ‘hey when are you moving over?’ That just fuels me to get stronger, faster and hone my craft more and people have moments that last in the annals of WWE history, but if you look at what I’ve done, I just show up all the time and deliver and I am waiting for someone after 14 years to show up all the time and deliver. You can ask many other WWE Superstars. I am just waiting for someone not to do it once – just to do it consistently better.”
Cena added, “People talk about the new era and back in the time machine they called it Ruthless Agression because they wanted it to be more ruthless and aggressive. I think the definition of the new era is that realization that now we have a talent pool that was as good or better than it was in 2002.” Cena said that he’s seen Seth Rollins do it all and he’s seen Cesaro do fantastic things. Daniel Bryan said that Vince McMahon said that Cesaro doesn’t have “it.” Vince said that during a Stone Cold podcast on the WWE Network several months ago. In response to that, Cena said that Vince did not like him back in 2003 but he stepped up and changed Vince’s mind. Cena said that it’s about believing in yourself and connecting with everyone else. He also said that he loves Dean Ambrose and Dean has done it his way since the second he stepped foot in WWE.
Cena said that you can show Vince that he is wrong and sometimes Vince might say things because he sees a glimmer of potential and he hopes to light a fire in you in hopes that you can prove him wrong.
