John Cena Talks His WWE Run: “The Audience Is Going To Dictate The Direction We Go”

According to the Undisputed WWE Champion himself, the creative direction for John Cena’s final run in WWE has seen “tons of pivots. ” Cena, who turned heel in March before winning his record-breaking 17th world title at WrestleMania 41, revealed that plans for his farewell tour have already changed numerous times.

In a recent interview with Collider, Cena praised WWE’s ability to adapt its storytelling on the fly.

“There is no more adaptable form of storytelling than WWE. WWE can change a story as it happens live,” Cena said. He then pointed to his own current run as a prime example. “You’re seeing, so far over the farewell tour dates, the 18 of 36 so far, we’ve made a ton of pivots, a ton of pivots right there in the moment.”

Cena explained that the WWE fans are the primary drivers behind these creative changes. He expects their influence to grow as his career truly nears its end.

“As we get close to the end of this thing, what dictates those pivots is the audience, and I think the audience will begin to feel differently, because now we are truly coming to the end,” he explained. “So, if you ever had a voice to use, if you ever wanted to say something, I hate to steal my own cliché, but the time is now. I look forward to the road ahead because the audience is going to dictate the direction we go.”

Cena is scheduled to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against CM Punk at Night of Champions on June 28.
