John Cena’s “Playing With Fire” exceeds expectations at the box office

John Cena’s latest movie, “Playing With Fire,” had an opening weekend where it was estimated of pulling in $12.8 million.

This exceeded the expectations that were released prior to the film being made available for people to watch in theaters. It was predicted to make $7 million to $10 million in its opening weekend.

Cena plays the lead role of a smokejumper, a firefighter who parachutes into remote areas to battle blazes.

The film is in third place behind Midway ($17.5 million) and Doctor Sleep ($14.1 million). According to reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it only has a 24 percent on its Tomatometer. The Audience Score has it as 81 percent.

Prior to the film being released, Cena stated that he donated $500,000 to a charity of Paramount Pictures’ choosing for First Responders Day.

The official premise of the film notes, “When straight-laced fire superintendent Jake Carson (John Cena) and his elite team of expert firefighters (Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo and Tyler Mane) come to the rescue of three siblings (Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery and Finley Rose Slater) in the path of an encroaching wildfire, they quickly realize that no amount of training could prepare them for their most challenging job yet – babysitters. Unable to locate the children’s parents, the firefighters have their lives, jobs and even their fire depot turned upside down and quickly learn that kids – much like fires –are wild and unpredictable.”
