John Cena’s WWE Retirement Match Going Head-To-Head With AEW Worlds End Is Looking Unlikely

As John Cena’s historic farewell tour continues through 2025, speculation has been rampant about when and where the 16-time world champion will have his final match. A new report has provided significant insight into the planned date for the momentous event, indicating that WWE and its broadcast partner NBC are zeroing in on a preferred night in December.

Cena’s final year in WWE has been one of the biggest stories in wrestling, featuring a controversial heel turn, an abrupt return to his babyface persona, and a main event loss over Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam.

NBC’s Preferred Choice

According to the latest episode of WrestleVotes Radio, sources have indicated that WWE’s broadcast partner, NBC, has a preferred date for the final match. The report states that Saturday, December 13th, is the frontrunner for the event.

“After asking around about the rumor dates for John Cena’s last match, we’re told NBC’s preferred choice is Saturday night, December 13.”

An Unlikely Alternate

The report also addressed another rumored date, Saturday, December 27th. While this date would have allowed WWE to directly counter-program AEW’s Worlds End pay-per-view, it is considered unlikely due to a conflict with another major sporting event that NBC has a contractual obligation to air on its Peacock streaming service.

“December 27 remains an option, although unlikely, as NBC has already an NFL contractual obligation with an exclusive game on Peacock that night, and they’d rather not compete with themselves, according to a source, while 12/27 does line up with AEW World End pay-per-view, something WWE could and would like to counter. Sources doubt it will be chosen because of the NFL obligations on NBC’s part.”

A Hometown Farewell

The report also reiterated that the expected location for Cena’s retirement match remains the TD Garden in his home state of Massachusetts. “As WCVB Boston reported back in May, the event is still expected at TD Garden in Boston, as the city would love to host Cena’s last match.”

John Cena’s farewell tour will continue throughout the fall, with his next scheduled match being against Logan Paul at Clash in Paris. You can hear the full report on the latest episode of WrestleVotes Radio.
