John Cena’s WWE SummerSlam status in doubt due to movie filming

It’s been previously reported that WWE hopes to have John Cena challenge Universal Champion Roman Reigns for the title at this year’s SummerSlam that takes place on Saturday, August 21st from Las Vegas, at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Variety reported today that Cena has signed on to be part of the cast for a new movie titled, “Argylle.” It also stars Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Shooting on the film will begin in Europe this August with the release date being sometime next year.

It will be interesting to see if this project impacts Cena’s WWE plans. The start date for filming will be important as if it’s after SummerSlam then it won’t impact Cena’s commitments to WWE. However, if it’s before SummerSlam then it will depend on the COVID-19 protocols, insurance, and filming schedule.

Insurance has prevented The Rock from wrestling while also filming movies in the past. Earlier this year, Cena made it known that the reason he couldn’t appear at WrestleMania 37 was due to the COVID-19 protocols that were in place while he was filming the “Peacemaker” series for HBO Max.

It should be noted that Cena did recently say during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon that he intends to make a WWE return, but didn’t know when that would be. Perhaps, this is the reason why he said that.
