Ken Shamrock Reflects On The Rise Of The Rock During Their 1998 Feud
Ken Shamrock and The Rock shared one of the most memorable rivalries of the Attitude Era, battling over the Intercontinental Championship throughout 1998. In a recent interview, Shamrock reflected on working with Dwayne Johnson just as he was transforming into “The Great One,” noting that his talent was undeniable from the start.
Speaking on the Wrestling Life with Ben Veal podcast, Shamrock praised The Rock’s wrestling IQ, stating that he could tell immediately that Johnson operated on a different level than his peers. He highlighted Rock’s ability to visualize matches and adapt his style to work with a legitimate fighter.
“He was another one you sat down, you could tell immediately that his mind was different than everyone else’s,” Shamrock said. “The way that he saw things, how he put matches together, being able to tie in what I did to what he does… He just had that mindset that he see things before they happened.”
The Transformation
Shamrock witnessed firsthand the moment The Rock’s career trajectory changed forever. He pointed to Johnson’s separation from the Nation of Domination and his increased microphone time as the catalysts for his explosion in popularity.
“As we were doing our matches together, he started feeling very comfortable and confident in the direction that his character was going to go,” Shamrock explained. “The minute they got him out of the Nation, the minute they handed him the mic, stars went off. It was just unbelievable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a transformation like that in my life that quick.”
Vince McMahon’s Vision
Shamrock also gave credit to Vince McMahon for recognizing the chemistry between himself and The Rock. He noted that while WWE was struggling against WCW at the time, McMahon’s ability to pivot and build new stars helped turn the tide.
“He brought me in, and then he saw the talent in Rock, and he saw the ability that The Rock and myself could have after we had our first match,” Shamrock said. “He saw something there, and was able to put us together… We both just skyrocketed when we were able to get together and really put on a program. That’s the only real program I ever had in pro wrestling. And we killed it.”
