LA Knight says Roman Reigns came into wrestling with every advantage of a famous family, and that measured by where each of them started, Reigns “ain’t in my league.”
Knight challenges Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank on Saturday in New Orleans. Asked on TMZ’s Inside the Ring whether there was anything he respected about Reigns, Knight started with his own background.
“For a guy who had no connections in the business, my dad loaded trucks for a living, and it’s a respectable living, but it didn’t do anything for me career-wise. You know what I mean? And it’s like when I look at that, and here’s a guy in Roman who had a famous family and this and that, and it gave him all the advantages to get where he is. At the same time, there’s plenty of guys who had those advantages and still fell short.
“So there is still a lot of great expectation that was put on him, and he still had to hold his end of the bargain up, and he has certainly done that. However, when people are like, ‘Ah, you know, LA Knight’s not in Roman Reigns’ league’… The guy came in the business here, and now he’s here. I came in the business here, and now I’m here. You ask me, he ain’t in my league. You look where I came from to where I am. It’s a whole different ball game. So I can respect everything that he has done and maintained with what he’s been given, but the key is it’s what he’s been given.”
Reigns is a member of the Anoa’i family. His late father, Sika, and uncle, Afa, are WWE Hall of Famers as the Wild Samoans.
Knight was also asked about talk that Saturday could be his last world title shot. He said he has framed it that way himself.
“I can’t just say is it my last one ever. I don’t know. I mean, it could be. Who knows? I might retire next week. You never know. But no, it’s just a matter of, it’s been so long that this has just been kind of hanging by a string. Where it’s like, so many people ask, like, how has LA Knight not been world champion yet? And that is a big-time question. To where it’s almost like put up or shut up, do or die. This is the time to do it. And if it doesn’t happen here, it’s just kind of like, where do I go from here?”
On the chance of someone cashing in Money in the Bank on him the same night, Knight said he is focused on winning the title first, and that anyone who tries it while he is on his feet is making a mistake.
“If I’m on my feet, it’s a bad idea to come down and cash in on me… Especially when I’m standing there with a heavy gold belt in my hand, because if you’re coming down to threaten my reign right off the bat, there’s a chance you’re going to eat one.”
Knight said Money in the Bank in New Orleans also has a personal tie: he had his first main roster match in the city in 2022. The full card, start time and how to watch are in our Money in the Bank preview.
