On a recent podcast at AdFreeShows.com, Kurt Angle said he was originally going to win the Undisputed Title at Vengeance 2001:
“The week before the PPV, I was still supposed to be Undisputed Champion,” Angle said.
Angle was one of the top stars being pushed during the invasion storyline at the time and it was clear that he was in line for a run with a World Title.
“Vince McMahon had me picked as The Undisputed Champion,” Angle said. “He wanted me to win the two titles. Vince came to me the week prior to the PPV and said, ‘Listen, is it ok if I give it to Jericho because I want to start pushing Jericho and I think this would be great for him.’ I said, ‘You should do that. I think Jericho needs it and this is a great opportunity for him.’ So I was supposed to win The Undisputed Championship but Vince McMahon changed it at the last second and gave it to Jericho.”
Jericho went on to beat The Rock to win the World (WCW) Championship and in the final match of the show, he beat Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship in a unification match to become the Undisputed Champion.
The decision to put both titles on Jericho propelled Jericho and he would go on to use the line “I beat Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock on the same night” for years during his promos.
