Kyle Fletcher regained the AEW TNT Championship on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, defeating Tommaso Ciampa. The victory occurred during the February 11 episode held at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Fletcher’s win was one of two title changes on the night, as Thekla defeated Kris Statlander in a strap match to capture her first AEW Women’s Championship.
Speaking to Downunder The Ring, Fletcher addressed the unpredictability that AEW brings to the professional wrestling industry.
“It’s part of the reason why kind of have the momentum we have right now. Wrestling was done a certain way, and still is being done a certain way. It’s following the rule book, it’s following what works. AEW, since its inception in 2019, it’s been about breaking that mold and stepping outside of the comfort zone and doing things that people don’t expect. That’s part of the reason why I love the company and why so many people love watching the company,” Fletcher said.
‘It’s Unheard Of’
Fletcher highlighted Tommaso Ciampa’s arrival and immediate success as an example of the company’s unexpected booking. Ciampa had previously defeated Mark Briscoe on the January 31 episode of AEW Collision to win the TNT Championship in his debut match.
“It could be any random Dynamite or Collision; Tommaso Ciampa showed up and won the TNT Title in his first match in the company. It’s unheard of. It’s why it’s so cool and what I love this company and the wrestling landscape. It’s so fun,” Fletcher stated.
The title change ends Ciampa’s reign at 11 days. Fletcher, a native of Australia, is now set for a homecoming. He will defend the TNT Championship against Mark Briscoe in a ladder match at AEW Grand Slam Australia on Saturday, February 14. The event will take place at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
