Kyle Fletcher discussed the art of cutting promos and the wrestlers who inspired him in that department. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the AEW star highlighted a WWE veteran who often divides opinion but played a major role in drawing him into the performative side of wrestling.
“This always gets a bit of a laugh,” Fletcher said. “Growing up, I’m a little bit younger than a lot of wrestling fans. One of the people that first drew me in with their promos was The Miz. A lot of people have things to say about him now, but I still think he’s one of the best. I’ve always thought that.”
Fletcher noted that appreciation for The Miz seems to be growing as he enters the later stages of his career, a trend he has observed with many veterans. However, his admiration dates back to his childhood.
“Totally, and that’s always how it happens as well,” Fletcher said. “It’s like, right when they’re on the way out, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, you know what? He was pretty good…’ But I was 12 years old in 2011, going, ‘This is the best! ‘I am awesome!!’ So yeah, that was probably my first one.”
When asked about the greatest talker he has ever seen, Fletcher pointed to John Cena. He singled out Cena’s recent work, noting that the 16-time World Champion can still captivate him as a viewer.
“I think (John) Cena is far and away the best promo guy I’ve ever seen,” Fletcher said. “The stuff in his final run, there have been a couple where I’ve just been sitting there glued to the screen, just like, ‘How is this guy just so amazing at what he does?’”
Fletcher also listed several modern stars who influence his current approach to microphone work. His list included top names from both WWE and AEW.
“Roman (Reigns) obviously now and then there’s Hangman (Adam Page), I think, is one of the best guys on the mic,” Fletcher said. “(Samoa) Joe, every time he’s on the mic, I’m so drawn into him. MJF as well. Those are kind of, like, probably where I draw the most inspiration from, I’d say — those guys.”
