Episode 10 of ESPN’s “Last Dance” documentary on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls covers the 1998 season. Among the highlights from the episode was when Dennis Rodman skipped Bulls practice during the NBA Finals so he could appear on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro.
Rodman is considered one of, if not the greatest rebounder in the history of basketball but is off-the-court antics often overshadowed what he did for the Bulls.
The documentary included footage of Rodman aligning himself with Hollywood Hulk Hogan and the NWO. The following day it was brushed off by Phil Jackson’s Bulls and the team went on to win the series.
The media buzz surrounding Rodman was at a fever pitch during that time and it rubbed off on WCW. The promotion was in the middle of the Monday Night War with WWE around this period and Rodman was one of several big names used to draw record-setting cable ratings for WCW at the time.
Rodman would go on to make more appearances for WCW after the Bulls championship season and WCW even got Karl Malone in on the action at Bash at the Beach 1998. At that pay-per-view, Rodman teamed up with Hogan against Malone and Diamond Dallas Page.
