Layla El’s most famous match remains the one that sent her LayCool partner Michelle McCool into retirement, and the former WWE Women’s Champion says she would jump at the chance to do it all over again.
Speaking with Denise Salcedo, Layla named a rematch with McCool as the bout she would most want if she ever stepped back into the ring.
“I would love to do the Michelle McCool match,” Layla said. “Wrestling our last match together, I loved that match, and would love to do that again just because it was such a great moment.”
Layla and McCool formed LayCool in 2009, becoming one of the defining acts of WWE’s Divas era and co-holding the Women’s Championship during a two-year run as the division’s top heels. The team came to an end at Extreme Rules 2011, when Layla defeated McCool in a No Disqualification Loser Leaves WWE match, a bout that sent McCool into retirement and that Layla has long called the highlight of her career. She has previously revealed that she worked the match with a torn ACL and MCL.
Layla, a two-time Women’s Champion, retired from in-ring competition herself in 2015 and has not wrestled since. In recent years, though, she has repeatedly expressed interest in a LayCool reunion, saying the pair owes it to each other and to their fans to team up one more time.
The idea has only gained momentum since McCool was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 41 weekend in 2025, with fans continuing to float the possibility of the duo reuniting.
