When asked if she missed the fan interaction of wrestling, Lee explained that she views her fans as family and that their support over the last decade has helped her feel “less alone.”
“My mission in doing everything in the public sphere is to help make people feel less alone and help wonderful weirdos realize that underdogs are cool and we can be the stars of our own stories,” Lee said.
The Physicality ‘Is Fun’
Lee, who retired from the ring in 2015, also discussed her experience returning to physical action for her role as Elee Dorado in the wrestling-themed TV series “Heels.” She admitted she was afraid at first but was pleased with how her body responded.
“I love them and I feel like I stay so close to them, always. They are a piece of my heart. I do miss having that direct connection where I can see them every week. The really cool thing is when I do mental health keynote speeches, wrestling fans will show up at these medical conferences. ‘You guys are the most beautiful people in the world.’ It really is a family bond. The physicality, I was so afraid to do Heels. It was the first time I wrestled in eight years and my body bounced right back. It was like riding a bike. A really painful bike. The physicality is fun,” she said.
While Lee continues to focus on her projects outside of wrestling, including her new comic “Day of the Dead Girl,” her husband, CM Punk, is preparing for one of the biggest matches of his WWE comeback. He is scheduled to challenge GUNTHER for the World Heavyweight Championship at the SummerSlam premium live event on August 2nd and 3rd.
