Lita: WWE considering introducing new titles for the Women’s division

The Mae Young Classic tournament has introduced fans to a whole new crop of talented women from the independent scene. Several of the women have been signed to contracts and most of them will start out in NXT but will eventually make it over to the main roster within the next year or so.

At one time, there were just a few women wrestling each other each week so there was never a need to create secondary titles but times have changed and now that there are more women under contract, it looks like we are getting closer to the introduction of another women’s title.

WWE Hall of Famer Lita did a Q&A in Paris, France and was asked if we’d see Women’s Tag Team Titles added to WWE shows.

Lita said, “There has been talks of tag titles for the Women’s Division and I think that I love that they first introduced the MITB briefcase, that’s been a long time coming and that adds an element of surprise within the title picture. I would love to see these rumored tag titles appear sooner than later, but for that to happen, I hope they bring up these women that are already at NXT or some women they’ve seen on the Mae Young Classic and expand the roster.”

At the 2016 Arnold Classic, Triple H said that he is open to the idea. He said that there was a time when we never thought that we’d see women in the main event of a pay-per-view or a Women’s IronMan match so he can definitely see a Women’s Tag Team Title being added at some point.

Some fans may not know this but the company did have WWF Women’s Tag Team Champions for a few years between 1983 and 1989. The titles were rarely defended on TV but the first champions, crowned on May 13, 1983, were Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria. The Glamour Girls defeated the Jumping Bomb Angels in 1988 before the titles were abandoned in 1989. During that time period, there weren’t enough women on the roster so it did not make sense to keep those titles around.
