The top match for this week’s episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown will feature The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan vs. King Baron Corbin in a Triple Threat Match to determine the number 1 contender for the Universal Championship.
A brief note in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter on WWE’s booking plans gives a pretty good indication on who is likely to win the match tomorrow night. The winner will go on to the Royal Rumble to challenge Bray Wyatt for his Universal Championship.
WWE has tried to tell the story that all three men have a reason to want a match with Wyatt. Bryan recently returned at WWE TLC to attack Wyatt after getting his head shaved. Miz’s issues with Wyatt are unresolved after losing to him and this was after Wyatt brought Miz’s family into their feud. Corbin says he deserves a title shot after beating Roman Reigns at TLC.
In the latest Wrestling Observer, it was noted that the original plan for the TLC pay-per-view was Bryan vs. Wyatt but the decision was made to hold off on that match until the Royal Rumble, which means Bryan is likely to win the match on SmackDown. Miz was a placeholder since the Wyatt vs. Bryan match at TLC was delayed.
As I noted before, the Corbin vs. Reigns feud has not ended yet so Corbin vs. Wyatt at the Rumble would make the least sense. Unless plans change again, it looks like it will be Bryan vs. The Fiend version of Bray Wyatt in Houston at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
