WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry has publicly stated that it is time for Drew McIntyre to capture the WWE Championship. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Henry argued that McIntyre has consistently performed at a top level but has frequently fallen short in major moments. He believes the company needs to give McIntyre a significant run with the title.
“Drew’s been run through the wringer. He always gets to the dance, but then they can’t find his invitation,” Henry said. “It’s time to throw the dude a bone and let him have his gloating heel king moment.”
Henry drew a comparison to Booker T’s iconic “King Booker” run, suggesting that McIntyre could benefit from a similar period of arrogance and character work while holding the top prize. He noted that a title reign would allow McIntyre to remind the audience of his talent while generating significant heat as a heel.
“I remember when Booker T was went into the King of the Ring, and he won the King of the Ring, and he became King Booker, and he started doing the pinky like Drew needs a moment of being the guy, so he can remind everybody how good he is,” Henry explained. “One and two, build up heat, and you want to see that title being taken off of him. Like, that’s the important thing in wrestling. And we went away from what becomes important, and we want to do what’s just entertaining.”
McIntyre is currently scheduled to face Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship in a “Three Stages of Hell” match on the January 9 episode of SmackDown.
