Mark Henry said Eddie Guerrero threw a punch at Kurt Angle backstage and Angle immediately took him down and lectured him on the ground, delivering the same line he used as his on-screen character.
Speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, Henry told story about the time Guerrero felt Angle had shown him up and confronted him physically. Angle took Guerrero down without difficulty and began talking to him while holding him on the mat.
“He said, ‘Man, what are you doing?'” Henry recalled. “And Eddie’s like, ‘You’re not gonna show me up. You’re not gonna disrespect me.’ He said, ‘You trying to fight me. Do you know I’m an Olympic champion?’ Like the joke, the character Kurt Angle was real.”
Henry said he wanted to break it up but could not get close enough because so many people were already trying to separate them.
“Nobody wanted them to fight,” Henry said. “And I was like, he’s like, ‘I’m an Olympic champion. What do you want? What’s wrong with you?'”
Henry said Guerrero’s response from the ground was what made the moment unforgettable. “Eddie said, ‘Because I’m stupid,'” Henry said. “It was like it was written, something that they wrote in a movie.”
Henry said the confrontation ended with everyone standing around laughing. Guerrero then told Angle that he needed to respect the business and never show anyone up in the ring, even if he has the ability to do so.
“Kurt learned a valuable lesson that day, as did Eddie,” Henry said. “They both learned that day.”
Henry reflected on the era and what it meant to be a part of it. “Man, wrestling was so fun, man,” Henry said. “I feel so blessed to be able to say that I got to do that for a living.”
