Matt Hardy comments following Jeff Hardy’s “arrest” on WWE Friday Night SmackDown

Matt Hardy took to Twitter after WWE aired a segment on Friday Night SmackDown that showed his brother Jeff Hardy getting arrested.

The “arrest” is playing off Jeff’s real-life history with substance abuse issues and it lines up with what WWE has done in the past with wrestlers, most notably Road Warrior Hawk in 1998 when they had him walk out to the ring while acting like he was drunk.

While Matt did not directly reference his brother or WWE in the tweet below, many fans on social media took notice of the timing of his message. It’s worth noting that Jeff was due to become a free agent at the same time as his brother Matt but more time was added to Jeff’s contract due to the time he was away due to injuries. Jeff’s contract is up either later this year or early 2021.

There is concern in WWE that Jeff will be the next big name to leave the company for AEW when his contract expires.

Matt tweeted, “Just to reiterate..
I’m happy to be working at @AEWrestling for @TonyKhan on Wednesdays.”

Tony Khan responded, “You’re one of the greatest pros I’ve worked with across sports, what a privilege it is to spend Wednesdays with you. Thank you for everything you do for AEW, our fans & staff & your fellow wrestlers weekly, as you not only lead by example but are so generous with your time & mind”

Matt responded, “Thanks for those kind words. You’ve created an amazing, positive, supportive environment that I am SO proud to be a part of. I’ll give you, the talent & every @AEWrestling employee my best across the board. Thank you for the opportunity to be that great pro, @TonyKhan. #ImWithAEW.”
