Matt Hardy recently reflected on the 17-year anniversary of his brother Jeff Hardy winning the WWE Championship at Armageddon 2008. Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Matt described the moment as “magical” and highlighted Jeff’s undeniable connection with the audience.
“He is a magnetic personality. He really is an enigma. He is unique. There is just something about him. I mean, he has it. When people say that shit, I mean, he has it, no doubt about it,” Matt said.
Matt recalled the immense popularity Jeff enjoyed during that run, noting that his merchandise sales were rivaling the top star in the company.
“Jeff was so incredibly popular at one point, he sold more merchandise than John Cena. And John Cena been on top for years at this point, you know. So merchandise was just crazy popular,” Matt stated.
He also shared insight into the creative plans at the time, revealing that there were discussions about Jeff holding the title all the way to WrestleMania, which would have altered their famous feud.
“I wish you had had the title all the way through Wrestlemania, which was something that was on the plate at one point… And I know there were some people that pushed you to that, and some people pushed and said, No, go ahead and have Matt turn on him at Royal Rumble. Like there was talk of me turning on at WrestleMania,” Matt revealed.
