Matt Hardy has compared Drew McIntyre’s run with the WWE Championship to the treatment he and Jeff Hardy received during their time with the company. Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy said McIntyre’s situation reminded him of a pattern he experienced firsthand.
“I feel like Drew has got the Hardy Boys treatment in many, many ways,” Hardy said. “When we were with Vince, we would win the titles, and we never held the titles for a long time, because Vince was like, you are over. You are good at what you do. You are good at your shtick. People love you. Titles, no titles.”
Hardy said the same logic appears to be applied to McIntyre today. “It is almost like Drew has fallen into that,” Hardy said. “Hey, you are a good heel. You are really good. Your work is great. Your character is great. You are still going to be fine whether you have the title or not.”
Hardy acknowledged how difficult that dynamic is for a performer who has put in the work. “It sucks, because it is nice when people that work so hard and bust their ass to win a championship get to have a nice reign,” Hardy said. “It really looks like, wow, they are the greatest tag team in the world, or this is the best wrestler in the world. He is the champion. He is our guy.”
Hardy said McIntyre has not been given the opportunity to establish himself as a dominant champion. “He has gotten a lot of reigns where they have ended rather quickly,” Hardy said. “It has not been like, long, or he has not had an extended reign where it was like, Drew is a great, dominant champion. He really deserves this reign to be a dominant champion for a year or ten months or eight months. He has been getting a lot of reigns where they have ended rather quickly.”
