Matt Hardy: ‘I Think Popping Drew McIntyre Into That Spot As The Champion Really Freshens Everything Up’

Matt Hardy weighed in on the major WWE Championship change that saw Drew McIntyre defeat Cody Rhodes. Speaking on the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, the TNA star expressed his happiness for McIntyre, noting that he had predicted a big year for the Scotsman. Hardy also believes the title change benefits Cody Rhodes’ character arc.

“Very happy for him. That happened. You know, it’s funny. I think I’d said that in my bold predictions of 25 that I had that Cena was going to beat Drew snd then he drops it back. So Drew definitely was deserving of a world championship. He was deserving to be in that top spot. And I think this is also very good for Cody. Cody’s in that point right now where he’s almost more valuable chasing for the title in some way. So I think it’s good. And I think Drew is someone who’s busted his ass. He’s been mega entertaining. He is someone worthy of that position, so I’m glad he’s got it, and he’s getting a legitimate run.”

On Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes III Being Cancelled

Hardy also addressed reports that WWE has scrapped plans for a third WrestleMania match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. He admitted that, personally, he prefers a fresh direction for the main event of WrestleMania 42 rather than seeing the same matchup for a third consecutive year.

“I mean, as a WrestleMania main event, I would, I would prefer, personally, to have something fresh, a new, big matchup, and I think popping Drew McIntyre into that spot as the champion really freshens everything up, freshens the scene up, and it really makes people curious of who is going to be his challenger. Is he going to keep the title through then? Is Cody going to get his rematch? It’s just a lot of possibilities, and it freshens up everything. And I think it’s good to do that.”
