Matt Riddle says he respects Goldberg, Vince McMahon loves Riddle’s CGI birds

WWE Superstar Matt Riddle is the guest this week on “Out of Character with Ryan Satin.” Riddle was on to talk about his relationship with Vince McMahon, working with Sheamus, winning the Royal Rumble, the CGI doves, RKBro and more.

Here are some highlights:

Riddle said his on-screen character and real-life personality have a lot of similarities:

“For me, honestly, it makes my job extremely easy because my character on television is me, and I’ll say this, I’m a little bit more oblivious on TV. I’m a little goofier on TV, but still very true to the true nature of who Matt Riddle is, or who Riddle is in real life. I try to tell people this. I’m not the greatest actor. I feel like most great actors play a certain role. Will Farrell, even if he is in a bunch of different movies, usually plays Will Farrell. I’m Riddle. I’m Matt Riddle. I like playing different versions of myself, be it the serious version in the ring, or a goofier one backstage.”

Riddle on being on the main roster compared to being in NXT:

“I think it’s awesome. I’ve had two championships. I’ve been way more successful on the main roster than I ever was in NXT, so honestly, I love it.”

Riddle explaining his trash talk:

“I am extremely confident, but I’ve also put in the work to be as confident as I am in what I say. I do think Vince respects it. I think he likes me a lot. I do think he thinks I definitely have overstepped my boundaries a couple of times, and he has definitely told me that I have. At the same time, I look at it like this. I really don’t mean to rub people the wrong way, but at the same time, we’re in the world of professional wrestling, and I talk trash. That’s what I do. That’s part of my job is to talk trash on people. I feel like if I talk really good trash, people get upset. I just think I’m really good at my job. Me and Goldberg don’t see eye to eye on some things. Me and other superstars, I’m not going to mention any names, don’t see eye to eye on some things. That to me is the beauty of professional wrestling, sports entertainment, is that we’re not supposed to. These differences, these qualms that we have is what’s great about what we do. The fact that we may have to work together one day and people know this, it makes what we do even bigger, more real, and better, if you ask me.”

Riddle was asked if him and Goldberg made amends:

“This is what I’m going to say. I know I’ve said some things. That’s what I do. I talk a lot of trash, but at the end of the day, when you get to know me, and even in passing or even working with other people, they’re probably going to bring me up and talk about me. I’m not that bad. They understand what I’m doing eventually. They get it. At least Goldberg I believe gets it. I think he also respects me, and if I’m being honest, I respect Goldberg. I respected him the whole time. I’m just not a huge fan of his style, professional wrestling in the ring. I like his promos. I like his movies. I like his move set. I’m just not a fan of some of his technical wrestling, but I respect his aura, and respect what he brings to the game every time. I do. The crowd is up. Everybody in the locker room is glued to the TV monitor. You can’t train somebody for that. That’s somebody. He is Goldberg. I think Bill respects me for my work, my passion, and my drawing ability. I think eventually I’ll get everybody else, those who shall not be named, I will also get them on the bandwagon. My whole life, I feel like people, being as I’ve always been this way, people either love me from the start or they despise me, but usually people come around.  Only time will tell, but I think we’re going to get those matches. I think I’m going to get everything to be honest. The way things are going, the response I’m getting at every live event, we’re doing things, so I’m very happy to be in the position I’m in right now.”

Riddle told us the story of the CGI doves being part of his WrestleMania entrance:

“I’ll give you the full story of the doves and why I think they’re so cool. They wanted Doves to fly out. I said, ‘Doves? Well, I’m the U.S. Champion. Why not eagles?’ They said, ‘Eagles are a little bit too big.’ I said, ‘How about a stallion or horses running out of my feet?’ They said, ‘Horses are too big.’ I said, ‘Why birds?’ They said, ‘Vince really likes the birds.’ I said, ‘You know what?  If Vince likes the birds, I love these birds. Let’s kick these birds off my flip flops everyday. I’m birdman. Let’s do it.’ The fact that Vince thought they were so cool and awesome, I said, ‘Well, if Vince thinks they are so cool and awesome, I think that’s cool and awesome.’ That’s where the birds came from. I’ll be honest. I don’t really argue about stuff too much. I’m very laid back.  I think that’s why  I’ve had so much success. I don’t politick too much. I have a good time and I work well with others.”
