AEW star MJF has added another major championship to his collection, traveling to Mexico City to defeat Averno for the CMLL Light Heavyweight Championship in the main event of last night’s show from the historic Arena Mexico.
A Controversial Victory In Arena Mexico
The finish of the championship bout came after a hard-fought contest. As MJF was working over the knee of Averno, he managed to distract the referee and deliver a low blow to the champion. He immediately reapplied a half Boston crab, and the weakened Averno was forced to submit, ending his year-long reign with the prestigious title.
Continuing His War With CMLL’s Top Stars
MJF’s victory is the latest chapter in his ongoing war with the stars of CMLL. He has spent the summer feuding with CMLL legend Mistico, a rivalry that saw Mistico defeat him by disqualification at the AEW Grand Slam: Mexico event. In the weeks since, MJF has vowed to take away everything Mistico cares about, and this championship victory is a significant step in that quest.
After the match, Zandokan Jr. came to the ring to confront the new champion. It was later announced that MJF will make his first defense of the CMLL Light Heavyweight Championship against Zandokan on August 15. The title win adds to an already successful period for MJF, who also won the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW’s All In pay-per-view, earning him a future shot at the AEW World Championship.
