News on who convinced Vince McMahon to put Bill Goldberg over Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series

Dave Meltzer provided an update on Bill Goldberg on Monday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer noted that Goldberg is definitely going to be back and there will definitely be a rematch with Brock Lesnar. It was something that Lesnar pushed for because he knows that there is money in Goldberg and he didn’t want to blow it off with just one match. Vince McMahon agreed and a deal was made earlier this week.

I noted last night that Goldberg and Lesnar are good friends in real life and that Lesnar wanted to put Goldberg over strong. I was told that the fact that Goldberg was not able to get in better shape in time for the match was a factor in the decision to do a quick match. Bryan Alvarez said that he got the impression that the match was short because Goldberg was hurt. Meltzer said that the shoulder injury (Goldberg noted that he tweaked his shoulder last Monday night) did not play a part in the decision to do a quick match but when Goldberg agreed to do more dates for WWE then it was decided to come up with something that would put Goldberg over strong (ie. the quick squash matches he did in WCW).

If you were a fan of WCW in the late 90’s then you’ll remember that most of Goldberg’s matches during his undefeated streak were squash matches and that is what helped get him over as a top star. That was the idea behind the match at Survivor Series. I give credit to WWE for the way they’ve booked Goldberg since he’s returned. His last WWE run was lackluster but they’ve corrected things this time. Everything worked out for the best. WWE is probably thrilled with the buzz surrounding the match and it probably helped get some extra WWE Network buys from people wanting to see the pay-per-view.
