WWE President Nick Khan recently shed light on the meticulous planning going into John Cena’s upcoming retirement tour, praising the wrestling legend for his professionalism and attention to detail. As Cena prepares to hang up his jorts after a historic career, Khan emphasized that the process has been incredibly smooth, dispelling any notions of conflict between the superstar and the company’s leadership.
During an appearance on the Impaulsive podcast with Logan Paul, Khan noted that the collaboration between Cena and WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque has been seamless. Khan stated: “There’s not been a dispute with John Cena since he announced his retirement tour.” Khan highlighted Cena’s generosity of spirit in the ring, noting that Cena prioritizes what is best for the business over his own win-loss record. “There’s never a ‘I don’t like this outcome because it doesn’t make me look good,'” Khan said. “There’s a lot of ‘Hey, let’s do this in the storyline.'”
Khan provided insight into just how involved Cena is with the business side of his final run, specifically regarding merchandise. According to Khan, Cena is steps ahead of the curve, planning city-specific details months in advance. “He said, ‘Hey, get me a list of the cities where you think I’m going to appear,'” Khan recalled. Khan shared an anecdote about the premiere of Cena’s Netflix project at the Intuit Dome. “He said, ‘Okay, so no Lakers colors there. Let’s go with the Dodger colors.’ He’s a step ahead of it. Always.”
The conversation also touched on Cena’s validation of younger talent. Khan revealed that prior to Logan Paul’s match against Cena in France, he asked Cena for his assessment of the social media star turned wrestler. “I said, ‘Give me your feelings on Logan,'” Khan explained. “And he said, ‘I’ll let you know after the match.'” Cena later confirmed his approval to Khan directly. “Called me maybe an hour or two after the match, and he said he has it.”
Khan reaffirmed that Cena’s retirement tour is a major priority for the company, and the partnership remains as strong as ever. With Cena calling many of the shots regarding his merchandise and presentation, WWE is prepared to give one of its greatest stars a send-off that maximizes both fan engagement and business opportunities.
