WWE had plans to give Davey Boy Smith, Jr. a new name and gimmick last year

Davey Boy Smith Jr. signed with WWE last year, which marked his second stint with the company after his first run from 2006 to 2011, but it didn’t go according to plan.

The former WWE Tag Team Champion worked a dark match at a SmackDown event where he teamed with Austin Theory and never made an on-screen appearance before being let go this past November.

While speaking with Inside The Ropes, Smith revealed that WWE had plans to give him a new gimmick. He recalled doing some backstage vignettes while he wore his father’s leather vest.

WWE was going to show that for the documentary about his father’s career, but he then got COVID-19 and was out of commission for about three weeks or a month.

“I don’t know what they were waiting for, the only thing I was told was, I was going to be debuting on SmackDown and they were going to call me ‘The Stampede Stud’. It just never happened, it wasn’t my fault. I showed up more than in shape. I saw Vince and he was like “oh you’re looking good kid”.

Smith did note last month in another interview that he is open to making another return to the company.
