NXT Takeover: WarGames II: Velveteen Dream vs. Tommaso Ciampa

The NXT Championship match between Velveteen Dream and Tommaso Ciampa was the semi-main event on NXT Takeover: WarGames II. Dream gear was made to look like Hulk Hogan’s “Hollywood” NWO gear.

There were some shenanigans early in the match with Ciampa taking Dream’s headband and Dream taking Ciampa’s NXT title. Dream also did the Hogan hand gesture to get cheers and teased hitting the Hogan legdrop on Ciampa. He eventually did the Hogan punches and a pair of legdrops later in the match.

Dream did the sharpshooter on the ring post that Bret Hart made famous. Ciampa tapped as the referee broke the hold but the ref didn’t see the tap. Ciampa was appeared to have been cut somewhere on his head.

There were plenty of near falls in this match including a kickout by Dream after taking the Project Ciampa backstabber. Ciampa grabbed his title and brought it into the ring but Dream rolled him up for a 2 count. Dream then hit the DDT on the belt and came an inch away from winning the title.

Ciampa was able to hit a DDT on Dream but was not able to get the 3 count. Ciampa tried to hit Dream with a DDT on the exposed ring floor but Dream pushed him into the announcers table and they both crashed over it and to the barricade. Ciampa got into it with Mauro Ranallo at ringside, Dream took control and got Ciampa back in the ring and hit the Purple Rainmaker and went for a pin but Ciampa kicked out. Dream went for another one on the ring apron but he missed and landed hard on the exposed floor.

Ciampa hit a nasty DDT in between the two rings on the steel and then pinned Dream to retain. Crazy match.
