Original Plans For The New Day’s Heel Turn

Monday’s WWE Raw saw Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods turn heel on Big E in a segment meant to celebrate The New Day’s success over the last decade.

Woods said that Big E left them, and Kofi agreed. Big E pointed out that he had broken his neck, but they didn’t care, and Kofi questioned why Big E hadn’t returned. Woods pointed out that he had surgery while Big E was gone before Kofi said that if he cared about them, he would’ve been back.

Kofi said Big E chose himself over them, while Woods said Big E would never be medically cleared and told Big E to get out of the ring and they would call him if they needed him, as Big E offered to be their manager. This angle officially kickstarted The New Day’s heel turn.

This was after WWE teased for months that Woods would turn on Kingston. This angle involving Big E on Monday’s Raw wasn’t what was originally planned.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the angle had been planned for months. Meltzer wrote, “When Odyssey Jones came in, they were going to tease issues with them not getting along but it would end up with Kingston & Woods going heel by choosing Jones and having him publicly replace E. But then Jones got fired and the whole thing was put on hold.”

Jones was fired by WWE earlier this year after domestic violence allegations came to WWE’s attention.
