Broadcaster Pat McAfee recently addressed his status with WWE during a question-and-answer session on his Instagram Stories. When asked about a potential return to WWE television, McAfee provided a direct response regarding his current standing with the company.
“I don’t think you ever say never, especially with WWE,” McAfee stated. “But right now it does not feel like it is something is supposed to happen. Feels like that business has kind of passed me by a little bit. I grew up loving it, dreamed to work in it. Feel honored that I had the opportunity to work alongside the GOAT Michael Cole. I feel like the biz is in a good spot without me. I’ll continue to watch.”
McAfee has been absent from his regular role as a color commentator on WWE programming since June 2025. At that time, he cited mental exhaustion and burnout due to his demanding media schedule. He made a brief return to the company for the inaugural WrestlePalooza premium live event in Indianapolis on September 20, 2025. However, he has not resumed a commentary position since that appearance. Prior to his hiatus, McAfee also competed in the ring against WWE stars such as Gunther, Austin Theory, and The Miz.
During his time away from WWE, McAfee has maintained his broadcasting commitments. He continues to host his daily ESPN program, The Pat McAfee Show, which recently featured guests such as Olympic skier Mikaela Shiffrin and NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Throughout the fall and winter, McAfee also served as an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast.
Despite previous statements from WWE President Nick Khan in December 2025 suggesting the company intended to bring McAfee back following the college football season, McAfee’s recent comments indicate that an on-screen return is not currently planned.
