Paul Heyman has offered a thoughtful explanation for why Danhausen has connected so strongly with WWE audiences, framing the Very Nice, Very Evil one as an essential tonal contrast within the product.
Speaking on ESPN Unsportsmanlike ahead of Backlash, Heyman was asked about Danhausen and gave a response that reflected genuine respect for what the character brings to the show.
It’s a reality that he is ridiculously popular and I understand why. If everybody is just crazy and insane and aggressive and b*tch slapping everybody else around them, well then there’s no let up, there’s no break, then it becomes monotonous. The old expression, I’m gonna hit you with so many rights you’re gonna beg for a left to break up the monotony. So there’s Danhausen, and Danhausen is different and unique. They teach you at, what, four or five years old in school, ‘Hey, be yourself, be different, stand out from the crowd.’ He’s not trying to fit in. He’s different. He’s unique, and look how many people are in love with him because of it. I applaud him.”
Danhausen debuted at WWE Elimination Chamber earlier this year and has become one of the more notable early success stories in recent WWE history. He finished as the third top merchandise seller at WrestleMania 42 behind only CM Punk and Cody Rhodes despite not having a match on the show, requiring multiple restocks throughout the weekend. Fanatics described the reception as blowing them away.
At Backlash this Saturday in Tampa, Florida, Danhausen must find a partner to team with him against The Miz and Kit Wilson. CM Punk is the current betting favorite to fill that role given his real-life friendship with Danhausen.
