CJ Perry shared her thoughts on the controversial finish to John Cena’s final match against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event. While many fans were devastated to see the 16-time World Champion tap out in his retirement match, Perry offered a different perspective, suggesting the loss made his character far more compelling.
“I loved it,” Perry said. “And he just became so much more human to me, and for me, he became much more relatable. I personally could never relate to the person that could always kick out on two. I could never relate to the person that like, I can relate about never giving up, but I could never relate to the person that always won, always won, always won. And I think that’s why he got, ‘Let’s go Cena, Cena sucks’ because the children are still in the Lulu world. You know, they’re still like, ‘Yes, if we work hard, we can make all our dreams come true.’”
Perry elaborated that the outcome provided a necessary reality check for younger viewers. She argued that Cena’s willingness to lose decisively in his final bout taught a more valuable lesson than another victory would have.
“Like, who’s gonna come? Second, third, fourth and last, most of us, you know, there’s only one winner for things… I think, though, he’s teaching the young children something way more important. You know, you could have, you could still be the goat, even, even when tapping out. And for me, that he’s become way more relatable, because now I’m like, ‘You’re human.’ And I think that’s why a lot of people are going, ‘You suck,’ because it’s like, that’s, this is a reality.”
The former WWE manager also addressed the future of the business following Cena’s departure. While she acknowledged the impact he had, she expressed excitement about who might step up to fill the void, noting that Cena’s specific legacy cannot be duplicated.
“I do think that, you know, especially John Cena, the character I think is gonna live on for a very, very long time,” Perry said. “And I also think that he’s not going to be replicated. You know, you’re like, ‘Oh, well, who’s the next,’ you know, he wants people to love the next one. Well, there’s never going to be a second John Cena. I think the question is, who’s going to change the business again? There is going to be future people that are completely going to change the business in that manner, like John Cena did, or Steve Austin did. But exactly that you can’t, you can’t rep. It wouldn’t be as iconic.”
