Kurt Angle has had some tremendous matches throughout his professional wrestling career. However, one that stands out amongst the bunch was his 2003 meeting with Chris Benoit for the WWE Title. “The Olympic Hero” successfully retained his title against “The Canadian Crippler,” but not before a masterful technical bout between two of the greatest in-ring competitors of all time. With the 2019 Royal Rumble approaching, Angle took a look back at his 2003 meeting with Benoit:

“Up next….. Royal Rumble in January 2019. 16 years ago I had the privilege of defending my WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble. This is how the match was explained verbally to those who haven’t watched it. “Professional wrestling in its purest form is as beautiful as ballet, as elegant as a ballroom dance and as captivating as a theater.

“By purest form I mean technical wrestling, which in today’s world is almost non-existent. The fiery chain wrestling, involving great chemistry, in-ring psychology and dream like story telling is something that happens when all the stars align.” This match was one of my best performances of my career. If you haven’t seen it, give it a look.”

Noticeably, Angle didn’t mention Benoit at all by name, and his face is barely visible in the photo he posted. This is due to the disturbing end that was the life of Chris Benoit. The Canadian murdered his wife and young child in 2007, shortly before taking his own life. As a result of the disturbing incident, WWE does not mention Benoit on their programming, with the exception of his past matches being available on the WWE Network.
