During his appearance on the Johnny I Pro Show, Bret “The Hitman” Hart shared fond memories of the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, recounting a chaotic night where their friendship turned into an impromptu wrestling match in a hotel room. Hart described Piper as a close friend who could also be unpredictable, leading to a situation where hotel security had to intervene.
Hart recalled a night where he and Piper were drinking beer and suddenly began amateur wrestling on the floor. The grappling session intensified to the point where furniture was being overturned. “We wrestled for about 45 minutes, tipping over the beds, knocking things over,” Hart said. “Security came in, and we were still wrestling on the rug… The bellman… finally agreed that… we would stop wrestling and fighting if he would go down and get us each one more beer.”
Beyond the hijinks, Hart credited Piper with being one of the few top stars of that era willing to elevate younger talent. He specifically highlighted their match at WrestleMania VIII as a pivotal moment in his career. Hart contrasted Piper’s selflessness with other top names of the time, specifically Hulk Hogan and Jake “The Snake” Roberts, whom he accused of being selfish.
“Roddy knew how to make a hero,” Hart explained. “Roddy was really the first guy to reach down and pull someone like me up to the next level and pass that torch. In contrast to guys like Jake Roberts and Hulk Hogan, who never passed the torch to anybody. All they did is take and take and take… two of the biggest pieces of sh*t in wrestling.”
Hart also revealed that leading up to their WrestleMania match, Piper played mind games with him by hinting that he might turn the match into a legitimate fight. “Roddy told me that… we might have to shoot for it out there,” Hart said. “He kept joking… but he would look at me like… he was getting really serious… I started to get kind of like, maybe he is getting kind of [serious].” Ultimately, Piper followed the plan perfectly, allowing Hart to secure the victory and the Intercontinental Championship.
