As most of you reading this know by now, WWE’s plans can always change and oftentimes, they can change hours or minutes before a show goes on the air.
The main event for this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw featured The OC (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows, and Karl Anderson) taking on Rey Mysterio, Ricochet, and Humberto Carrillo. The match finish was Styles hitting the Styles Clash from the second rope onto Ricochet, leading to the pin.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Vince McMahon changed the main event at the producer’s meeting that happens a few hours before the show.
Meltzer said, “I believe the idea was Orton & Ricochet & Carrillo were to beat Styles & Gallows & Anderson.” Meltzer said that the idea was for Mysterio to help the faces win by perhaps countering Drew McIntyre.
However, McMahon wanted it changed to Orton not wanting to team with the faces so the decision was made to put Mysterio in the match and McMahon wanted Orton to run in and do the RKO out of nowhere on Styles immediately after the match because McMahon wanted Styles to get the pin. Ricochet ended up being the unlucky guy since McMahon didn’t want to beat Mysterio.
Here is a clip from the final moments of this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw that shows Styles taking the RKO after pinning Ricochet.
