Possible reason for WWE’s edict to ban wrestlers from engaging with third parties

Word broke on Friday that Vince McMahon sent out a letter to its wrestlers about how they need to stop working with third parties. The exact parties that wrestlers can’t use is still unclear, but the belief is that those would include such as Twitch and Cameo.

Dave Meltzer talked about this on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio episode. Although the exact reason for WWE wanting this to stop is still not confirmed, he believes WWE is trying to get a deal done for the brand on these platforms.

Thus, it makes it more valuable for the company to sign what Meltzer called a “team deal” with a third party company with all of its talent being on WWE’s platform instead of stars having their individual deals.

“I can tell you the talent doesn’t really know exactly, but I think that they know they got to get off Twitch and Cameo. I don’t think YouTube, I know people who don’t think YouTube, but it has not been completely explained what this means to them. My first thought just from what I heard that WWE probably wants to make a deal and individual deals undercut the team deal and so they want to make exclusive deals and if guys and women have their own deals then it’s not exclusive. That’s what I assume it is, I’m still waiting to hear back from WWE.

Meltzer stated that things are still vague and talent is waiting to have the company cleared it up.
