CM Punk may have a roadblock on his way to the main event of WrestleMania 42. While the “Second City Saint” is currently scheduled to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns in Las Vegas, reports suggest he will have to get through a familiar opponent in his hometown first.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, as of February 2, one proposed idea for Elimination Chamber features CM Punk defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor. The event is scheduled to take place in Chicago, Punk’s hometown, making his participation a priority for the company.
Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp added that the plan has long been for Punk to compete at the event in some capacity, given the location. One specific creative direction heard by Sapp involves Punk accepting the rematch on “his turf” after previously competing in Europe, which was closer to Balor’s home.
The two men have been on a collision course for weeks. Balor has not competed since January 19, when he lost to Punk in a title match. Following that loss, the tensions escalated on Raw when Balor attacked Punk during his match against AJ Styles. Notably, Balor missed out on competing in the Royal Rumble match.
If the match becomes official, it adds a title defense to the Elimination Chamber card on February 28, just weeks before Punk is set to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
