WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has weighed in on the legacy of John Cena, stating that his current rival is unequivocally the greatest of all time in their shared generation.
Speaking on the Mostly Sports podcast, Punk discussed wrestling Cena one final time at Night of Champions this year, as well as getting to witness the culmination of Cena’s farewell tour up close.
“To me, it’s kind of like the universe will always put you where you need to be,” Punk stated. “So, me coming back two years ago to WWE is really kind of kismet, because now all of a sudden, John Cena is doing this retirement tour, and I just, the entire step of the way, I’ve just been fortunate to be there to witness it. I feel like, ‘Man, this is where I needed to be.’ Watching him gracefully bow out has been just tremendously rewarding, obviously.”
The World Champion later gave his firm opinion on the debate surrounding Cena’s “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) status, a title promoted heavily by WWE during the tour. “He’s somebody who, we’re calling him the GOAT. It’s very subjective. But in my lifetime, in my career, somebody who always led by example. Box office superstar, charismatic through the roof. Great on the mic, does all the PR. Over the last 20 years, 100% the GOAT,” Punk proclaimed.
Punk, a die-hard Chicago sports fan, also expressed his desire to wrestle in his hometown’s famous baseball stadium, Wrigley Field. While no official plans have been announced, Punk has previously appeared at Wrigley Field to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.
Cena has only two matches left on his final tour: an Intercontinental Championship defense against Dominik Mysterio at the Survivor Series Premium Live Event on November 29, and his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
