CM Punk On WWE Unreal: I’ve Been Taught To ‘Protect The Business,’ Not ‘Let Insiders In’

With the new behind-the-scenes docuseries “WWE: Unreal” set to premiere on Netflix on July 29th, CM Punk has shared his thoughts on the show. During a recent interview, Punk admitted he has mixed feelings about pulling back the curtain due to his “old school” mentality about the wrestling business.

CM Punk On His ‘Old School’ Mentality

Appearing on Unsportsmanlike with Evan Cohen, Chris Canty and Michelle Smallmon, Punk was asked for his thoughts on the show, which takes fans into the WWE writers’ room. He stated that his professional upbringing makes him hesitant about exposing the business.

“I’m probably the wrong guy to put on this show to try and talk it up,” Punk said. “It’s not that I’m so much against it, it’s that my entire existence in my profession, professional wrestling, you’re taught and you’re brought up, and you’re old school, you protect the business… It’s just really strange, for me at least, because I’ve always been taught you protect the business, you don’t let the insiders in.”

Comparing ‘WWE: Unreal’ To ‘Hard Knocks’

Punk compared the upcoming docuseries to popular sports shows like HBO’s Hard Knocks, which gives an inside look at NFL teams. He acknowledged that the show is ultimately for the fans and will give them a new perspective on the relationships and environment backstage.

“What this show is going to do is just show us backstage in our environment, interacting with each other and that’s really for the fans,” he explained. “You see it all the time with football shows like Hard Knocks… That’s sort of what we’re doing. We’re following suit in a way.”

While Punk may have mixed feelings about pulling back the curtain, he is currently at the center of one of WWE’s biggest storylines. On this past week’s Monday Night Raw, Punk won a gauntlet match to become the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. He is now scheduled to challenge the champion, GUNTHER, at the SummerSlam premium live event on August 2nd and 3rd.
