Randy Orton’s promo on last week’s WWE Raw went longer than planned

Last week’s episode of Raw closed with an emotional segment involving Randy Orton and Ric Flair.

Essentially, Orton cut a promo about how Flair wanted to still be in the spotlight despite his in-ring being over and that was the reason that Flair aligned himself with him as of late.

Although Flair tried to dismiss this theory, Orton didn’t believe him. Orton said that Flair wanted him to be the son that Flair wished he had, which was a reference to Flair not being as close with his son David, who never made it big in the business.

It ended with Orton hitting a punt kick to the WWE Hall of Famer although the actual spot wasn’t shown due to WWE’s policy with older talent. The angle on Raw was done to write Flair off the show.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported on Monday that the segment went way longer than what fans saw on TV. Sapp wrote, “Orton’s promo was much more than what was actually broadcast, with multiple people in attendance saying there were “minutes” of material that didn’t end up getting used.”

It was noted that others in WWE said told it was an edit simply to fit time and didn’t have anything to do with quality.

Orton will challenge Drew McIntyre for the WWE Title at Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view event.
