Former WWE/WCW/ECW/TNA star Raven recently spoke with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated about a number of topics. During the interview, he was asked what made ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) so successful. “ECW worked because a lot of the guys sucked,” Raven said. Raven said that some of the matches weren’t good because the guys weren’t that good. He added that he doesn’t agree with going ballistic every match because that doesn’t go anywhere.
Raven returned to WCW in 1997 but his second stint in the company didn’t last long as he was frustrated with the direction of his character leading into the 1997 Starrcade PPV event, which he helped Perry Saturn win against Chris Benoit in a “Raven’s Rules” match at the event. Raven said that Starrcade was not an opportunity because he didn’t wrestle on the show. He walked out after Eric Bischoff told him in a meeting at the event if he is not happy then there’s the door. Raven said that Bischoff knew he wasn’t happy. “If I hadn’t quit, I would have ended working on top,” Raven said. Raven explained WCW management ended up bringing in guys like Vampiro to work on top, and Jeff Jarrett, to work with Sting. “So the opportunities would have expanded, and they wouldn’t have needed Vampiro because they had Raven.”
