Matt Riddle dropped the WWE United States Title to Sheamus on the second night of WrestleMania 37. This finish caught some fans off guard as Riddle was the favorite heading into the bout.
WWE originally had plans for Keith Lee to be the champion, but he’s been absent since February. It’s been well documented that WWE had advertised Bobby Lashley defending the United States Title against Matt Riddle and Lee in a Triple Threat Match at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event.
John Morrison ended up replacing Lee in the match because WWE wanted to keep it a three-way because they wanted to get the title off Lashley so he could go on to hold the WWE Title. Morrison, who was just a name in the match, took the pinfall.
Dave Meltzer noted on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio that because Riddle was never supposed to be the champion, WWE rectified it with Sheamus winning it at WrestleMania 37.
“Riddle was never supposed to be champion. They had to do it because Keith Lee was supposed to win it, for whatever the reason is, was pulled. They had to get the belt off Lashley because they were giving the WWE Title to him. It was one of those situations. They couldn’t give it to Morrison because Morrison was in the Bad Bunny angle. Riddle got the belt because there’s no other choice so this rectifies it.”
Meltzer speculated that this feud will keep going and with WrestleMania: Backlash taking place next month, fans could see a lot of rematch take place at this show.
