Reason why Triple Threat Match was booked on WWE Monday Night Raw

WWE had originally advertised that the biggest match on this past Monday’s episode of Raw would be a six-man tag match between The Bloodline and the New Day.

However, the match was interrupted by Bobby Lashley. This led to a Triple Threat Match between Roman, Lashley, and Big E being booked for the main event of the show.

It was reported the day of the show that if Raw did strong ratings with the Universal Champion appearing then it could lead to WWE making a change to the brand split rules.

Dave Meltzer noted on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that the decision to have this match was made midday on Monday in order to draw the strongest ratings possible.

“Obviously, the six-man tag was going to be the main event of the show, originally. What happened on the weekend shows in North Charleston and Augusta, they did a three-way between Roman Reigns, Bobby Lashley, and Big E, and Vince [McMahon] got the word that the matches were very good. So at noon the day of the show, he did an about-face and moved the six-man tag to basically set up this match as the main event, figuring this would be the strongest ratings possible by putting that match on television. That’s why it wasn’t advertised and that’s why it was a last-minute thing.”

Reigns will defend the Universal Title against Finn Balor, who will be portraying his Demon character, at Extreme Rules this weekend. Big E doesn’t have a match lined up at the event just yet.
