Reason why WWE nixed original plans for top WrestleMania 37 match

Edge won this year’s Men’s Royal Rumble Match on Sunday which guarantees him a title match at WrestleMania 37. This is a big change to what the original plan for this show was that dates back to last year.

When Edge went down with torn triceps in his match with Randy Orton at Backlash, the idea would be for the WWE Hall of Famer to make his return and have a blowoff match with “The Viper” at WrestleMania 37.

However, Dave Meltzer noted on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio that Edge came up with the idea to win the Royal Rumble and challenge for a title at Mania. Thus, WWE decided to go with the plan to do Edge vs. Orton on Monday’s episode of Raw as a way to pay off the feud since Edge has other plans for WrestleMania.

“They were going to do an I Quit match at WrestleMania. Edge, in fact, got this idea of coming back and winning the Royal Rumble and maybe winning the championship. They had to get out the Randy Orton thing, and that’s how they got out of it.”

WWE has yet to officially announce who Edge will challenge at WrestleMania whether that be WWE Champion Drew McIntyre or WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. The reported opponent was revealed on Monday.
