Referee Marty Elias appeared on this week’s “Talk Is Jericho” to discuss the ending of The Undertaker’s streak and told a story about Trevor Murdoch.
Marty Elias said that the Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak almost came to an end at WrestleMania 25:
“At WrestleMania 25, when I did my counts on Taker after the dive, that count was a shoot count (When Taker went for the dive, didn’t get caught, and landed on his head).”
“The only instruction I ever got out of that match was from Taker. He said, ‘If I don’t get back in, you shoot count me out’, and we came very, very close to counting him out. But if you go back and look at that, I was drawing my counts out, and I was drawing 74,000 people in with my counts. I took my time because I was still selling because they had bumped me earlier. So I was still selling that,” he said.
“But at the same time, I was still dramatizing it and I was elongating that count. So I was getting the people behind me. I was looking at Taker, and Taker and I didn’t make eye contact until nine on the 10 count. So that streak almost ended at WrestleMania 25 on a count out.”
“He was concussed. He had a broken collarbone. He broke his ring finger. So yeah, he was pretty fu*ked up.”
Marty had a Trevor Murdoch story about count outs:
“I have a great story with Trevor Murdoch and The Hardys about not kicking out,” Marty shared.
“We were doing a loop. The Hardys had just got their titles, and they just came back as the Hardys, so they were running an angle with Cade and Murdoch in 2008.”
“It was their very first house show. They were in the third match. Jeff goes up on Trevor’s shoulders and rolls through. Mind you, this is three or four minutes into the match. Trevor goes up, rolls through, 1-2-3, Hardys win. The Hardys’ music played. We give them the titles.”
“Cade and Murdoch were pissed. They started throwing chairs at me. They started throwing shit at me and telling me they’re gonna kill me. So we got to the back and Arn Anderson was the agent with Steamboat. Arn looks at me and he goes, ‘What the f*ck happened?’ I said, ‘I counted three.’ Trevor said, ‘We’re gonna get him’, and I said, ‘I counted three, Trevor.'”
“So everybody leaves and Arn has me, Trevor and Lance stay. Remember back in the day when they would videotape and everybody would watch the monitor? So Arn said, ‘We’re going to watch and see what happened.’ He rewinds it to the match. We watched it. We’re going into the spot. Jeff rolls through, 1-2-3. Arn stops it, gets up out of his chair, looks at me and says, ‘Marty, you can leave. Trevor, you didn’t kick out. Bye.'”
